Local tips

Stay on the paved path and never step past a barrier or lean over the edge.

Carry a torch after dark, as some stretches are poorly lit.

Get to a café terrace before sunset if you want a table facing the sea.

Walk the path early in the morning for quiet views and cooler air.

Swim from the beach, not near the rocks at the foot of the cliff.

Take extra care on the path in the monsoon, when it gets slippery.

Walk north to the end of the cliff for quieter viewpoints and smaller beaches.

About Varkala Cliff (North Cliff)

The North Cliff is a long red laterite cliff that rises above Varkala Beach. A paved path runs along the top, lined with cafés, yoga studios, craft shops and guesthouses, and nearly every table looks out over the Arabian Sea. It is the centre of Varkala's traveller scene and the best place in town to watch the sunset.

The cliff is also a natural monument. Its layered rock is the only exposed cliff of its kind on India's west coast, and it was added to UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list in 2025. Erosion is a real problem: heavy rain has made parts of the edge crumble in recent years, and some stretches have no fence, so it is important to stay on the path.
