About Jalakandeswarar Temple

Jalakandeswarar Temple stands inside Vellore Fort and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was built in the mid-16th century by Chinna Bommi Nayak, a Vijayanagara chieftain, and its name refers to the water that is said to have surrounded the original lingam. The tall gopuram at the entrance is one of the first things you see inside the fort.

The temple's best-known feature is its kalyana mandapa, or wedding hall, to the right of the entrance. Its pillars are carved with horse riders, yalis and other figures in fine Vijayanagara style. For centuries the temple had no regular worship, as the fort was held by armies and used for storing arms. Worship resumed in the early 1980s, and today it is an active temple again.
