About Vellore Fort
Vellore Fort was built in the 16th century by Vijayanagara chieftains and is one of the best-preserved forts in South India. Its double walls of large granite blocks, round bastions and wide moat still stand in the middle of the city. The moat is said to have once held crocodiles.
Inside the walls are the Jalakandeswarar Temple, St John's Church from 1846, a mosque, the Government Museum and old palace buildings such as Tipu Mahal. After 1799 the British held Tipu Sultan's family here, and on 10 July 1806 the fort saw the Vellore Mutiny, one of the earliest large revolts of Indian soldiers against the East India Company. You can walk along parts of the ramparts for views over the moat and the city.
