How long this takes
Ways in
The difference between a twenty-minute visit and a three-hour one.
The star path
- Everyone walks it, barefoot, about 1.5 km through the gardens - the walk is the design, and it moves steadily
- Walk it in the morning or after about 4:00 PM; the paving heats seriously by midday
Evening aarti
- The about 7:00 PM aarti with the lit shrine draws the day's fullest walk - start the star by 6:00 PM to be present for it
Festival days
- Navratri, Deepavali and the temple's own anniversaries fill the star path completely; the counters' guidance on the day is the one to follow
At the gate

What gets refused, and what you cannot take past the door.
What to wear
Enforced, and stricter than most: no shorts, bermudas, midi, nighties or lungis. Dhoti, kurta or trousers for men; saree or salwar for women.
Phones and cameras
Cameras and phones are not permitted inside the complex.

Festival windows
These follow lunar calendars and move by weeks each year, so the windows are months, not dates.

Practicalities
The things that go wrong
Book through official channels, and treat anyone promising a guaranteed slot as a warning sign.
What to watch for
- Charging for entry; entry is free, and any optional arrangement is the temple's own, at its counters inside
- Selling star-path 'shortcuts' or cart rides past the walk; the path is the design and nothing bypasses it
- Camera-storage or locker attendants demanding arbitrary amounts; a small fixed charge is normal, a quoted rate is not
- Gold-foil 'souvenirs' claimed as temple gold at collector prices; the temple does not sell its gold, and the shops outside sell craft work
- Auto and taxi fares quoted only on arrival from Katpadi or the city; agree the fare before setting out
General guidance
Planning the visit
Customary practice and what Vellore's climate means for a barefoot visit — not rules posted at this temple. Anything specific to Sri Lakshmi Narayani Golden Temple, Sripuram is above.
The queue is the ritual
Vaishnava temples in India are usually organised around a moving darshan queue rather than time spent in front of the deity. Expect to keep walking, and expect the view of the sanctum to be brief — that is the intended experience, not a rushed one.
Come in winter
Winter is when Vellore is most comfortable to walk around, which matters here because a temple visit is done on foot and barefoot. Locally the window is given as november to february.
Stone gets hot — go early
You will be barefoot from the shoe rack onwards, often across an open courtyard. Between late morning and mid-afternoon in the hot months that stone is genuinely painful to stand on. Socks help, and are permitted almost everywhere shoes are not.
Arriving by train
Vellore has a railway station, and auto-rickshaws wait outside it. Agree the fare or use a meter before you set off, and expect to be dropped a short walk from the temple rather than at its door.
No airport here
Vellore has no airport of its own, so the last leg is by road or rail. Plan the return the same way — the last bus out is often earlier than visitors expect.

Sripuram Golden Temple (Sri Lakshmi Narayani), Vellore
Finished in 2007 and sheathed in more than 1,500 kg of gold foil — the largest gold-covered temple anywhere. The approach is a star-shaped path about a kilometre and a half long, walked barefoot, which is the actual experience of the place.
✨ The gold
About 1,500 kilograms of pure gold, worked into foil and laid in fifteen layers across the vimanam and the ardha mandapam, inside and out — roughly double the gold of Amritsar's dome, and the largest gold covering on any temple in the world.
The work was done by hand — around four hundred artisans over some six years — the foil laid on copper plates over the shrine structure, every detail of the ornament worked at craft scale rather than industrial. The gold itself was given by devotees, which is the temple's own account of its material: not a treasury spent but an offering gathered.
The result does what gold does at sunrise and sunset: the shrine glows rather than shines, and the evening is the hour the complex was designed around.
⭐ The star path — the pilgrimage of the approach
The temple sits at the centre of a star-shaped walkway — the Sri Chakra path, after the discus of Vishnu — and every visitor walks it, barefoot, about one and a half kilometres of it, through gardens, fountains and sculpture.
This is not a queue; it is the temple's own design, and it converts a visit into a pilgrimage at walking pace. The path carries depictions of the twelve zodiac signs and the twenty-seven nakshatras along its length, and the gardens around it are the complex's second work of art.
Practicalities: the paving heats seriously by midday — walk the star in the morning or after about four in the afternoon, carry nothing you cannot pocket, and let the slow pace do what it was designed to do.
🕉️ The deity and the institution
The shrine holds Sri Lakshmi Narayani — the goddess in her gracious form, an image about five feet tall — at the centre of the star, which is to say at the centre of the whole design.
The temple was built under the guidance of Sri Sakthi Amma, the founder of the Sri Narayani Peedam at Thirumalaikodi, and consecrated on 24 August 2007 as part of a spiritual park that includes a meditation hall and gardens. It is a modern temple in the full sense — built in the 2000s, in the Dravidian idiom, with modern infrastructure underneath — and it draws both pilgrims and visitors in numbers that most ancient shrines would envy. The wider park carries the Peedam's own programmes — meditation sessions, community feeding, green initiatives across its hundred acres — and the temple is best understood as the centrepiece of that institution rather than a stand-alone monument.
🌅 The evening — the hour to be there
Sripuram is designed for the hour before dark. The gold takes the low sun and gives it back warm; the path's fountains and gardens are lit as the light falls; and the about 7:00 PM aarti, with the shrine glowing against the dusk, is the moment the whole complex was arranged around.
Walk the star from about 6:00 PM, be at the shrine for the aarti, and walk out under the lights — that is the perfect Sripuram evening, and the one the regulars keep. Mornings are the quiet alternative: the gold in the first light, the gardens cool, the walk nearly alone.
🕒 Timings and the day
Open for darshan daily about 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM — some listings give earlier openings and midday breaks, so the temple's own schedule is the safe guide. The ritual day runs the suprabhatam at dawn, abhishekam, alankaram and naivedyam through the morning, aartis at noon and evening, and the Friday abhishekam with milk, honey and sandalwood. The evening aarti around 7:00 PM, with the shrine lit against the dusk, is the hour to be present for.
Entry is free; the temple's own optional arrangements are made at its counters inside.
👗 Rules — stricter than most
The dress code is enforced, and stricter than most: no shorts, bermudas, midi, nighties or lungis. Dhoti, kurta or trousers for men; saree or salwar for women. Cameras and phones are not permitted inside the complex — the star path and the gold are for your eyes, which is, in the end, the temple's whole argument.
📍 Vellore and around
Thirumalaikodi, at Vellore — on the Chennai-Bengaluru axis, with Katpadi the rail junction and the city an easy drive from either metropolis. Vellore Fort, with its Jalakandeswarar temple and museum, is the standard pairing and a fine contrast: a sixteenth-century granite fort against a twenty-first-century gold shrine, one town apart.
October to March is the comfortable season; the gold and the gardens are at their best in the winter light.
Last verified: 2026. The 24 August 2007 consecration under Sri Sakthi Amma and the Sri Narayani Peedam, the approximately 1,500 kg of gold foil in fifteen layers laid by hand by around four hundred artisans on copper plates, the star-shaped Sri Chakra path of about 1.5 km walked barefoot with the zodiac and nakshatra depictions, the five-foot Lakshmi Narayani image at the centre, the ritual day with the Friday abhishekam and the about 7:00 PM evening aarti, the enforced dress code, the phone and camera prohibition, and the free entry are documented. Published hours differ between sources; the temple's own schedule is authoritative.
