Best time to visit Vijayawada

November to February is the comfortable window in Vijayawada. The rest of the year is either very hot or wet and humid, and Dasara in October brings the biggest crowds of the year.

November to February: the good months

Days are warm, usually around 30 °C, and nights drop to a comfortable 18 to 20 °C in December and January. The sky is clearer, the river is calm, and walking around Undavalli or Kondapalli at midday is possible. This is also when Bhavani Deeksha devotees in red fill Indrakeeladri, usually in December, and when Sankranti comes round in mid-January.

March to June: heat

The heat builds quickly from March. May is the worst month, often above 40 °C and sometimes past 45 °C; the city's record is 48.8 °C, set in May 2002. Nights stay hot, and hot winds blow in the afternoon. If you have to come now, do the temple at dawn, rest indoors from late morning, and go out again after sunset.

June to September: the monsoon

The south-west monsoon usually arrives in June. The air is humid, with heavy bursts of rain rather than steady drizzle. When rain upstream fills the Krishna, the Prakasam Barrage opens its gates, which is a sight in itself, but boats to Bhavani Island can stop. Low-lying parts of the city flood in very heavy rain. In September 2024, the Budameru stream broke its banks and left large neighbourhoods under water for days, so watch the forecast if you visit late in the season.

October and November: cyclone season and Dasara

October brings Dasara at the Kanaka Durga Temple. In 2026 the festival runs from 11 to 20 October. Hotels fill and prices rise, and the hill becomes one long queue. These two months are also cyclone season on the Andhra coast, and a storm can bring two or three days of heavy rain. Check the forecast before you book around a date.

Who should come when

For sightseeing and photos, come from late November to February. For the festival, come for Dasara and accept the crowds. For quiet temple visits at lower prices, February and early March are a good compromise before the heat.
