A city at a river crossing

Vijayawada grew up where the Krishna squeezes between low hills before it spreads out into its delta. That narrow point is the reason the city is here. The British built an anicut across the river in the 1850s, the present Prakasam Barrage replaced it in 1957, and three canals now run through the middle of town carrying river water out to the rice fields. It is also a rail crossroads: Vijayawada Junction, opened in 1888, is one of the busiest stations in India. Most visitors come for one reason, the goddess on Indrakeeladri hill, and stay a day or two for the rest.

Two days that cover it

Start the first day early at the Kanaka Durga Temple, before the queues build and before the heat. Come down to the riverfront for lunch, rest through the afternoon, and be back at the river for sunset and the barrage lights. On the second morning, cross the barrage to the Undavalli Caves, about 8 km away, while the sun is on their east-facing front. In the afternoon, either take a boat to Bhavani Island or drive about 25 km north-west to Kondapalli Fort and the toy makers' colony below it. Mangalagiri, about 12 km south, is the place for handloom cotton sarees.

Getting in and around

Gannavaram airport is about 20 km east of the centre. The railway junction and the Pandit Nehru bus station are both close to the river and the temple. Autos and app cabs cover the city. Undavalli and Kondapalli are easiest by cab, and a driver for half a day costs less than a string of separate rides.

Heat, rain and the river

This is one of the hottest cities in South India. May regularly goes past 40 °C, and the record is 48.8 °C, set in May 2002. The monsoon runs from about June to September, and October and November bring cyclone rain off the Bay of Bengal. In September 2024 the Budameru stream overflowed and flooded large parts of the city's northern and western neighbourhoods for days. November to February is the comfortable window, and the best time to visit page goes month by month.

Eating here

Food in Vijayawada is hot in every sense. An Andhra meal comes with rice, dal, gongura, pickle, rasam and curd, and the chilli builds as you go. Pesarattu, a green moong crêpe, is the breakfast to look for. The food page explains each dish and where to find it.

Questions

Vijayawada — FAQ

Is Vijayawada worth visiting?

Yes, for one or two days. The Kanaka Durga temple, the evening on the Krishna riverfront and the Undavalli Caves are the highlights, and the city is a good base for Kondapalli, Mangalagiri and the old Buddhist site at Amaravati.

How many days do I need in Vijayawada?

One full day covers the temple, the barrage and Bhavani Island. Add a second day for the Undavalli Caves and Kondapalli Fort, which are outside the centre.

Is Vijayawada the capital of Andhra Pradesh?

No. The state's capital, Amaravati, is being built on the south bank of the Krishna, about 20 to 30 km from central Vijayawada. Vijayawada is the largest city nearby and where most visitors stay.

How far is Vijayawada from Hyderabad?

About 275 km by road, which usually takes five to six hours. Many trains run between the two cities, and there are regular flights to Gannavaram airport from other major cities.

Yes. The ancient Buddhist site at Amaravati, with its stupa remains and museum, is about 35 km away and makes an easy half-day trip by car.
