Local tips

Start early, because the ridge has little shade and gets hot by late morning.

Check opening days before you set out, as some sources list a Monday closure.

Hire a cab for the round trip, since public transport to the top is limited.

Wear walking shoes, as paths inside the fort are rough and rocky.

Visit the toy colony after the fort, when the workshops are busy.

Buy toys directly from the makers, who can also pack them for travel.

Carry all the water you need, because there are few stalls on the hill.

A fort that changed hands many times

Kondapalli Fort sits on a ridge about 25 km north-west of Vijayawada, above the small town of Kondapalli. It was built around 1360 by Prolaya Vema Reddy of the Reddi kingdom. Over the next four centuries it passed to the Gajapatis of Odisha, the Vijayanagara empire and the Qutb Shahi sultans of Golconda, before the British East India Company took it in 1766.

What you see

The main gate, the Dargah Darwaza, is a massive granite entrance about 12 feet wide and 15 feet high. Inside, the Tanisha Mahal palace sits on a saddle between two hilltops, with chambers below and a large hall above. There is a deep spring-fed reservoir, and the Golconda Darwaza on the far side leads down towards the plains. The state archaeology department has restored parts of the fort and improved the road up.

The view

From the ramparts you look out over the plains and scrubby hills towards the Krishna. It is quiet, rarely crowded and cooler than the city in the early morning.

Kondapalli toys

Kondapalli town is famous for its painted wooden toys, made from a light local wood called tella poniki. The makers live and work in the Bommala Colony, the toy colony, in the town. The craft is about 400 years old and has a GI tag. The classic pieces are the ten avatars of Vishnu, elephants with howdahs and village scenes, and they are used in the bommala koluvu doll displays at Sankranti and Navaratri.

Planning the trip

Allow half a day from Vijayawada with a cab. Some sources say the fort is closed on Mondays, so check before you go. Carry water and wear walking shoes, as the paths inside are rough.
