Plan a monsoon day →November to February: the good months
This is Vizag at its easiest. Daytime highs sit around 28 to 30 °C, nights drop to about 20 °C, and rain is rare from December on. It is the best time for the beach at sunrise, the view from Kailasagiri and the trip up to Araku, where winter mornings are cool and misty. It is also the busiest season, so book trains, the Araku Vistadome coach and weekend hotels early.
March to June: heat and humidity
Temperatures climb from March, and May is the hottest month, with highs in the mid-30s and very humid air that makes it feel hotter. Sightseeing works if you go out early and late and rest in the middle of the day. Araku is a good escape. A cyclone can form in the Bay in May, so glance at the forecast.
June to September: the south-west monsoon
Rain arrives in June and builds through September, but it usually comes in bursts rather than all day. The ghats turn very green, and the Araku train ride is at its most dramatic, though landslips can disrupt the line. The sea is rougher than ever; stay out of it.
October: wettest month, cyclone season
Many guides lump October in with the winter season, but in Vizag it is the wettest month of the year, as the north-east monsoon and storms from the Bay arrive. October and November are the main cyclone months on this coast; Cyclone Hudhud struck the city in October 2014. Most years pass without a direct hit, but a storm can close the airport, trains and beaches for days. If you travel then, keep plans flexible and follow the weather department's warnings.

- Budget: June to September for lower hotel rates.
