Local tips
Plan your visit for a weekday afternoon, as the museum opens after lunch and is shut on Mondays.
Wear flat shoes, because you step over high doorways and use short ladders inside.
Carry as little as possible, since bags make the narrow passages harder to move through.
Ask the retired naval guides questions; they often served on similar boats.
Visit the TU-142 aircraft museum across the road on the same ticket trip.
Take your photo of the full hull from the beach side, where the whole length fits in the frame.
Go early in the session on weekends, before school groups and families arrive.
A real submarine on the sand
INS Kursura was India's fourth submarine. It was built in the Soviet Union, commissioned in December 1969, and patrolled the Arabian Sea during the 1971 war with Pakistan. After 31 years of service it was retired in 2001 and hauled up onto RK Beach, where it opened as a museum in August 2002. It was the first submarine museum in South Asia, and the boat has been kept close to how it was in service.
Inside the hull
The visit is a one-way walk through the length of the boat, about 91 metres. You squeeze through the round hatches between compartments and pass the torpedo room, the control room with its dials and periscope, the engine spaces and the tiny bunks where the crew of about 75 slept. Retired naval personnel act as guides and explain what each space was for. It is short, but it gives a real sense of how cramped life aboard was.
Across the road
Opposite the submarine is the TU-142 Aircraft Museum, a retired Indian Navy long-range patrol plane that hunted submarines. The two together tell both sides of the story, the hunter and the hunted, and most visitors do both in one go.
Practical details
The museum usually opens only in the afternoon and evening, and it is closed on Mondays. Sunday hours may include a morning session. Check before you go. Entry is ticketed. The passage is narrow, with steep ladders and raised doorways, so it is hard going for people with limited mobility, and not ideal for anyone uneasy in tight spaces.
