Local tips
Keep out of the water beyond your knees, because rip currents here can pull even strong swimmers out.
Arrive before sunrise to watch the sun come up over the sea with the ships at anchor.
Plan the submarine museum for the afternoon, since it opens after lunch and is closed on Mondays.
Walk south towards the headland for a quieter stretch and a view of the port.
Avoid weekend evenings if you dislike crowds, because families fill the promenade after five.
Take your rubbish with you, as bins along the promenade overflow on busy evenings.
Check for weather warnings in October and November, when storms can close the beach.
The city's front room
Ramakrishna Beach, always called RK Beach, is Vizag's main seafront. It takes its name from the Ramakrishna Mission ashram nearby, and it runs along Beach Road from near the Dolphin's Nose headland in the south. There is no single sight here. The point is the promenade: families out in the evening, morning walkers, corn and snack sellers, and ships waiting at anchor off the port.
What lines the promenade
Several of Vizag's sights sit along this stretch, so a walk here covers a lot. The INS Kursura submarine lies on the sand, with a Navy patrol aircraft turned museum across the road. The Victory at Sea memorial honours those who died in the 1971 war. There is a small Kali temple, the Visakha Museum, and plenty of benches facing the water.
The sea is not for swimming
This matters more than anything else on this page. The water off RK Beach is rough, with strong rip currents and rocks, and people drown on this coast most years. Lifeguards are posted along the city beaches in daylight hours. Paddle, if you want, only near them and only in shallow water. Never go in after dark or after drinking.
Sunrise and evenings
The beach faces east, so the sun rises out of the sea, and the first hour is the calmest and coolest time to be here. Evenings are the social time. Weekends and holidays get very crowded from about five until late.
Nearby
Beach Road continues north past Kailasagiri to Rushikonda. The listed restaurants for seafood and coffee are on the same road; see where to eat.
