Local tips
Avoid Tuesday and Friday evenings if you dislike queues, as these are the goddess's busiest days.
Leave your shoes at the stand before you climb the steps to the shrine.
Keep your phone away inside, as photographing the goddess is not allowed.
Walk down to the lake bund for sunset views back up to the temple.
Buy flowers or coconut at the stalls only if you want to make an offering, as it is optional.

Pair the visit with the Thousand Pillar Temple in the same afternoon.
The Kakatiyas' goddess
The Bhadrakali Temple stands on a rocky hill between Warangal and Hanamkonda, above Bhadrakali Lake. It is thought to be older than the Kakatiya kingdom. Some accounts trace it to the Chalukya period in the 7th century, although the dating is debated. The Kakatiyas adopted Bhadrakali as their family deity, and the temple has been rebuilt and expanded since. It remains one of the busiest temples in the city.
The shrine
The goddess is a seated stone image with many arms, holding weapons, and she wears a crown. The image is known for its fierce, direct gaze. The temple is in constant worship, with bells, lamps and queues on Tuesdays, Fridays and festival days. Photography of the goddess is not allowed.
Festivals
In July, the 15-day Shakambari festival decorates the goddess with vegetables, and on the last day she is covered entirely in them. Both Navaratris bring daily alankarams, when she is dressed and decorated, and very long queues. At Bathukamma, in September and October, women gather here with flower stacks.
The lake
Bhadrakali Lake was built as a reservoir, and the bund and park below the temple are now a walking area. From there, the view back up to the temple on its rocks is best in the evening light. The Thousand Pillar Temple is a short ride away, so the two fit into one afternoon.
