Local tips

Leave Warangal at dawn so you reach the temple before the stone platform gets hot.

Hire a local guide at the gate, because the carvings hide stories you would miss alone.

Walk round the outside first to see the madanika bracket figures on the corner pillars.

Remove your shoes at the entrance and carry socks for hot stone later in the day.

Do not use flash near the carvings, and ask before photographing priests.

Walk the bund of Ramappa Lake next door after the temple.

Carry water and snacks, as Palampet has very few places to eat.

Telangana's World Heritage Site

The Ramappa Temple stands at Palampet in Mulugu district, about 65 km from Warangal. It was built in 1213 by Recherla Rudra, a general of the Kakatiya king Ganapati Deva, and dedicated to Shiva as Rudreshwara. It is named after its sculptor, Ramappa. In July 2021, UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site under the name Kakatiya Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple.

Why it matters

The carving is the finest the Kakatiyas left. Slender madanika bracket figures of dancers, musicians and huntresses lean out from the outer pillars in polished black stone. Inside, the pillars and ceiling are covered with dancers, and the poses were later used to revive the Perini Shivatandavam dance form. The temple also shows Kakatiya engineering. It stands on a foundation filled with sand to absorb movement, and its tower is built of bricks light enough to float in water. You may be shown a sample.

Visiting

The temple is managed by the ASI and is usually open from early morning to around 6 pm. Puja is still performed in the shrine, so remove your shoes and dress modestly. A local guide adds a great deal, as many carvings tell stories you would otherwise miss. Allow two hours.

Making a day of it

Ramappa Lake, the Kakatiya reservoir that fed the area's fields, is right next door, with a bund to walk along. Laknavaram Lake, with its hanging bridge, is about 30 km further. Leave Warangal at dawn, see the temple in the morning light, and eat at Palampet or carry a packed lunch.
