About Banasura Sagar Dam

Banasura Sagar Dam, near Padinjarathara, is about 20 km from Kalpetta and is known as the largest earth dam in India. It holds back a wide reservoir surrounded by the Banasura hills. When the valley was flooded, the tops of the old hills became a scatter of small green islands, which give the reservoir its look.

From the entrance, a walk of about 1 km takes you along the dam to the boating area, where speed boats and pedal boats go out among the islands. The long embankment and open water make this one of the most relaxed sights in Wayanad, and a good half-day stop.
