Local tips

Go early in the morning, before the heat and the crowds.

Do not plan your visit for a Monday, when the caves are usually closed.

Wear shoes with a good grip for the steep steps and iron ladders.

Carry water, but keep your hands free for the climb.

Do not touch the carvings; they are protected and fragile.

Expect a queue on the narrow ladders during weekends and holidays.

Eat in Sultan Bathery, about 12 km away, as there are only stalls near the caves.

About Edakkal Caves

Edakkal Caves are high on Ambukuthi Mala, a rocky hill about 12 km from Sultan Bathery. They are not true caves but a deep cleft in the rock, formed where a huge boulder became wedged between two others. The walls are covered in carvings of human figures, animals and symbols made thousands of years ago, among the oldest rock art in South India.

Reaching the carvings is part of the visit. From the car park, a steep road leads to the ticket counter, followed by a climb up steps and iron ladders through the rocks. The views over the Wayanad hills from the top are worth the effort. The caves usually close on Mondays, and daily entries are limited.
