Ziro can be visited all year, and each season changes how the valley looks. Pick by what you want to see: green fields, gold harvest, festivals or clear winter skies.

March to May: spring and Myoko

Days warm up and the fields are prepared and planted. Myoko, the big Apatani spring festival, is usually celebrated in March. Showers begin by April. It is a good time for village visits and walks, with fewer visitors than autumn.

June to August: green fields, heavy rain

The valley is at its greenest, with flooded fields full of young rice. It also rains a lot, and the road from Itanagar can be hit by landslides, so allow extra time. Dree, the farming festival, falls on 5 July each year and brings the whole valley out.

September to November: harvest and music

The fields turn gold in late September and are harvested through October. The Ziro Festival of Music usually runs over four days in late September. After the rains clear, October and November bring the best walking weather, with cool days and clear skies.

December to February: crisp and clear

Winter is dry and sunny, with frost on the fields most mornings and cold nights. The fields are bare and brown after harvest, so the famous green views are gone, but the light is lovely and the valley is quiet. The Murung festival is usually held in January.

At a glance

  • Greenest fields: June to August.
  • Golden fields: late September and October.
  • Best walking weather: October to November and March.
  • Festivals: Myoko (March), Dree (July), Ziro Festival of Music (late September).

Planning notes

Book early for the music festival and Myoko, as rooms in Ziro are limited. Road trips in the monsoon need spare time. See what to wear in Ziro for each season.
