The climate in one line

At about 1,500 metres, Ziro has mild days, cool nights and a lot of rain between April and September. Winter days are sunny and crisp, and nights can drop below freezing in December and January, with frost on the fields.

What to pack

  • Layers: a T-shirt, a fleece and a warm jacket cover most of the year. In winter add thermals, a hat and gloves for evenings.
  • Rain gear: a proper waterproof jacket from April to September. Umbrellas are fine in town, less useful on trails.
  • Shoes: trail shoes or light boots with grip. The bunds between the fields are narrow and slippery after rain, and Talley Valley's trails are muddy most of the year.
  • Festival kit: for the Ziro Festival of Music in late September, bring rain boots or shoes you do not mind ruining, a rain poncho and a warm layer. The festival ground can turn to mud.

Village visits

There is no strict dress code, but modest clothing is respectful. Take your shoes off if you are invited into a home, and wear socks you are happy to show.

Apatani dress

Apatani weaving uses cotton with bold patterns, often white, black and red. Men wear woven shawls and jackets, and at festivals priests and elders wear cane hats and ornaments. Women wear wrapped skirts and blouses with woven shawls. At Myoko and Dree, families come out in their finest. Woven shawls and bags are sold in Hapoli and in some villages; buying from weavers directly helps keep the craft going.

Small things

Insect repellent for summer evenings, a head torch for power cuts, and a dry bag for your phone. See Ziro photo spots for where you will be walking.
