Best Photo Spots in Ziro

Ziro photographs as a valley: flat fields of rice in every shade of green or gold, pine hills around them and villages of wooden houses along the edges. People are part of the picture here, which means asking first.

The valley floor

The fields are the reason most people come. From June to August they are bright green and full of water; by late September and October they turn gold before harvest. Walk the raised bunds between them early in the morning, when mist sits on the valley and farmers are already at work. Stay on the paths: these are working fields and the bunds are easily damaged. See Ziro Valley paddies.

The villages

Apatani villages such as Hong and Hija give you lanes of wooden houses on stilts, tall babo poles, raised lapang platforms and granaries at the edge of the fields. Go with a local guide. Many elders with facial tattoos do not want to be photographed, and some have been treated as attractions for years. Ask, and if the answer is no, put the camera away.

High points

Kile Pakho is the easiest viewpoint over the whole valley and good at sunrise. The hill around the Meghna Cave Temple gives smaller views.

The forest

Talley Valley is dense fir, bamboo and moss, dark even at midday. Bring a wide lens and a way to keep it dry.

Light and weather

Mornings are usually clearest. Afternoon cloud and showers are common from April to September. Winter brings frost on the fields and clear blue skies, but the fields are bare and brown.

Festival photography

At Myoko, Dree and the music festival, rituals and performances are easy to photograph from the edges. Ask before shooting priests or animal offerings, and never step into a ritual space.

Questions

Ziro — FAQ

Can I photograph Apatani women with facial tattoos?

Only with their clear permission. Ask, ideally through a local guide, and accept a refusal. Many elders are tired of being treated as a photo stop.

When are Ziro's fields greenest?

From about June to August, when the fields are flooded and the rice is growing. They turn gold before harvest in late September and October.

Can I walk in the rice fields?

You can walk on the raised bunds between fields, carefully. Do not step into the fields or damage the water channels; they are working farms.
