Forest on a plateau

Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary covers about 337 sq km of high forest above the Ziro valley, at around 2,400 metres. It is known for silver fir, bamboo, rhododendron, ferns and orchids, and for rare animals such as the clouded leopard, though you are unlikely to see one. The forest is dense, mossy and often wet, and it feels very different from the open valley below.

Permits and guides

On top of your Inner Line Permit or PAP, you need permission from the forest department. Ask at the forest office in Hapoli before you go. A local guide is strongly recommended, as trails are not well marked and the weather can close in quickly. Hotels and homestays in Ziro can often connect you with guides who know the route.

Getting there

The sanctuary is roughly 30 km from Hapoli. Part of the way is by road and the rest on foot. A day trip is possible, but many people stay over with a guide and camping gear, or in forest department accommodation if it has been arranged ahead. Ask about road conditions after rain.

What to bring

Waterproof boots, a rain jacket, warm layers, snacks, water and leech socks in the wet months. Carry everything out with you.

Getting the photograph

This is a place for close-up and forest shots: moss on fir trunks, orchids, streams and light breaking through the canopy. A wide lens and a cloth to wipe moisture off it are useful.
