A valley farmed for centuries
The floor of the Ziro valley is covered in flat, flooded rice fields divided by low earth bunds and fed by channels that bring water down from the hills. The Apatani raise fish in the same fields as the rice, and grow millet on the raised bunds. No machines, little or no chemical fertiliser, and a water system shared across whole villages. It is the heart of the Apatani cultural landscape on UNESCO's tentative list.
Seasons in the fields
Fields are prepared and planted in spring. From June to August they are flooded and bright green. By late September the rice turns gold, and harvest runs through October. In winter the fields are drained and bare, often white with frost in the morning.
Walking the fields
Walk on the raised bunds, one behind the other, and give way to farmers carrying loads. Do not step into the fields or block the water channels. A local guide can show you how the system works and which paths are fine to use.
Getting the photograph
For the patchwork effect you need height: the slopes above Hong and Hija, or Kile Pakho, look straight down on the fields. From the bunds, shoot low along a line of rice with a village or pine hill behind. Mist on still mornings softens everything.
Nearby
The Apatani villages line the edges of the fields, so a morning in the paddies leads naturally into a village walk.
