Udon Thani, Udon Thani Province

A sandstone hillside of mushroom-shaped rock formations, prehistoric rock shelters with 3,000-year-old paintings, and the largest collection of sema — carved Buddhist boundary stones — anywhere in the world, which is what UNESCO inscribed it for in July 2024.

Good to know

Local tips

This became a World Heritage site on 27 July 2024, which makes Udon Thani the only province in Thailand with two of them — and it is still almost empty on a weekday, because the listing has not reached foreign guidebooks yet.

The sema stones are the reason for the inscription rather than the rocks: carved slabs that marked the consecrated ground of a monastery, from the Dvaravati period around the eighth century, and there are more of them here than anywhere else in the world.

The rock formations have a folk story attached — Nang Usa's tower, a princess shut in a rock by her father — which every local guide will tell you and which is far older in the telling than the archaeology.

It is a forest walk of a couple of kilometres over sandstone with steps and roots, not a paved monument. Shoes, water, and allow two hours.

Phu Phrabat

Phu Phrabat: the monument shoot in Udon Thani, and the plan below is how to work it in the time the light gives you. Budget for entry (a historical-park ticket at the foreigner rate); the posted hours are typically 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.

📸 The shot

Work the geometry - repetition, scale and symmetry carry monument frames far more than any single detail does.

The frame to set up first is the one this guide's angle row describes - low beneath an overhanging rock so the impossible balance of the cap on its stem is the frame, with a sema stone or a person for scale - and everything else is a variation on it.

🌄 Light and crowds

Time the visit for the window that suits the shot - early morning, when the light comes sideways through the trees onto the mushroom rocks and the forest is still cool — this is a walking site and by eleven you will not want to be on it - and let everything else flex.

Crowds run low here - you can work a frame slowly, wait for it to empty completely, and move around for a second version.

👕 What to wear

Of the colours that suit this spot, cream photographs softer than white and suits heritage backdrops. The pose rows on this page are built for the spot - start with the one about beneath one of the mushroom rocks, small in the frame for scale and adapt from there.

📋 The working plan
