Udon Thani

The capital of the Thai north-east, and the only province in the country with two UNESCO World Heritage sites: a Bronze Age village whose pottery rewrote the prehistory of Southeast Asia, and a hillside of mushroom-shaped rocks turned into Buddhist boundary shrines in the eighth century. Forty minutes away, a lake goes pink for ten weeks a year.

Isan is a third of Thailand's population and almost none of its tourism, and Udon is its most reachable city. The language spoken here is closer to Lao than to Thai, the music is mor lam rather than luk thung, and the food — sticky rice eaten with the fingers, grilled chicken, fermented fish — is what most of Bangkok's street food actually is, sent down by migrant workers and renamed. Two other things shaped this particular city: a Vietnamese community that has been here since the colonial period, with its own quarter and its own restaurants, and a very large American air base during the Vietnam War, which turned a provincial town into a boom city and left a generation of families behind when it closed.

Questions

Udon Thani — FAQ

What is Udon Thani famous for?

The capital of the Thai north-east, and the only province in the country with two UNESCO World Heritage sites — Ban Chiang, the Bronze Age village whose pottery rewrote Southeast Asian prehistory, and the rock formations of Phu Phrabat — plus the Red Lotus Sea and Isan food.

How many days are enough for Udon Thani?

Two: the Red Lotus Sea at dawn and the city's night market, then Phu Phrabat, Wat Pa Phu Kon or Ban Chiang — all a drive out of town.

What is the best time to visit Udon Thani?

November to February — cool, dry, and the only weeks the Red Lotus Sea is in bloom. April on the plateau is brutal.

How do I get around Udon Thani?

The province is spread out — the Red Lotus Sea sits east of the city, the temple country north-west, and the heritage sites are all a drive away. The city itself is a compact hub.

What is the Red Lotus Sea?

A shallow freshwater lake south-east of the city that fills with pink water lilies for about ten weeks each winter. The flowers are open at first light and closing by ten, so it is a dawn trip — an hour and a half by boat from the jetty, pushing through water that has turned solid pink to the horizon.
