October and November

The rain eases through October, and by November the air is dry and clean. The hills are still green, and the long views from Reiek open up. Days are warm, usually in the mid-20s °C, and evenings are cool. This is one of the best times to come. The Mizo harvest festival Thalfavang Kut is usually held in November.

December to February

This is the driest stretch, with almost no rain. Days are mild and sunny, and nights fall to around 11 °C in January, so bring a jacket. Christmas is the high point of the year, with lit-up streets and carol singing. Rooms fill up in late December, and many businesses close around Christmas and New Year, so book early.

March

March is warm and mostly dry, with the first showers late in the month. The big event is Chapchar Kut, the Mizo spring festival, usually held in early March. Some years the air is hazy from the burning of jhum fields on the hills, which softens the long views. Check the festival calendar for this year's date.

April

April is the turning month. Temperatures peak, and showers and storms become more frequent through the month.

May to September

This is the monsoon in Aizawl. The rain arrives in May, earlier than in much of India, and May to September each get over 300 mm on average. Cloud often sits on the ridges for days. Landslides can block the highway and roads out of the city, and flights can be delayed. If you come now, keep a spare day, carry rain gear and check road news before any trip out of town. Everything is very green, and the waterfalls around the state are full.

Weekdays or weekends

Whatever the month, remember that Sunday is a day of rest. Plan your shopping, museum visits and trips to Solomon's Temple for Monday to Saturday.
