Dress for the steps

Aizawl is built on ridges, and many streets are steep slopes or stairways. Wear comfortable shoes or trainers with a good grip. Heels and smooth soles are hard work here, and after rain the steps get slippery. If you are going up to Reiek, trail shoes are better still.

Winter, October to March

Days are mild and sunny, usually in the low to mid-20s °C. Nights are cool, and in December and January they drop to around 11 °C. Pack a warm jacket or fleece for the evenings and a light layer for the day. Ridge-top viewpoints such as Durtlang Hills are windy after sunset.

Rain, April to September

Showers start in April, and from May to September it rains hard and often. Bring a proper rain jacket or a good umbrella, quick-drying clothes and shoes you do not mind getting wet. A spare pair of socks helps on long days.

Church and Sunday

Sunday is church day, and Mizos dress smartly for it. Many women wear a puan to church. If you visit a church or Solomon's Temple, cover your shoulders and knees and keep your clothes plain and tidy. The same simple, neat look works everywhere in the city.

The Mizo puan

The puan is the handwoven wrap skirt at the centre of Mizo dress, made in stripes and bold patterns. The puanchei, in red, black and white with dense woven motifs, is the most prized, and women wear it for festivals, weddings and the bamboo dance at Chapchar Kut. You can buy puans at Bara Bazar and in handloom shops. Handwoven ones cost more and feel heavier than power-loom copies, so ask which you are buying.

Small things

Carry sunglasses and sun cream for clear winter days, when the sun at altitude is strong. A small day bag leaves your hands free on the steps.
