Good to know

Local tips

Come in the early morning for the best birdwatching and an almost empty beach.

Bring binoculars if you have them, as the trees behind the sand are full of birds.

Sit in the casuarina shade in the middle of the day instead of on open sand.

Carry water and snacks, because there are fewer stalls than on the town beach.

Swim only close to shore in the calm months and never in the monsoon.

Take all rubbish back with you, as bins are scarce along the sand.

Book a Kihim homestay if you want a quiet base away from town traffic.

A quieter beach

Kihim is a village and beach about 10 km north of Alibaug. The sand is long and fairly clean, and a line of casuarina trees runs behind it, giving shade that the town beach does not have. There are fewer stalls and far fewer people, which is exactly why people come.

Birds and butterflies

The trees, gardens and farms behind the beach are good for birdwatching. The ornithologist Salim Ali, known as the Birdman of India, spent time at Kihim and studied birds here. Common sightings include bulbuls, magpie robins, bee-eaters, weaver birds and koels, and migrant birds pass through in winter. Butterflies are plentiful after the monsoon.

On the sand

Early morning is the calmest time, with soft light, fishermen at the water's edge and almost no one else about. It is a good beach for a long walk. In the evening the sun sets over the sea, and the casuarinas turn into dark shapes against the sky.

Swimming

In the calm months the water is gentler than off town, but currents still change with the tide. Swim close to shore and only where others are in the water. Do not swim from June to September. Do not count on lifeguards.

Staying here

Kihim has homestays, cottages and villas set back from the beach, many among coconut and areca palms. It makes a quieter base than Alibaug town, with the town beach and Kolaba Fort a short drive away.

Getting there

Take a rickshaw or car from Alibaug; the drive takes about 20 minutes. From Mandwa jetty it is also close.

When to go

October to March for calm sea and birds. Weekdays are almost empty.
