Local tips
Combine it with the evening at Ram ki Paidi, as the temple stands on the same riverfront.
Come early in the morning for a calm darshan before the ghats fill up.
Expect long lines on Mondays in Shravan and on Mahashivratri.
Carry a small pot of water if you want to offer it to the lingam as local devotees do.
Keep the camera away from the lingam inside, and photograph the spire from outside.
Leave your shoes at the stand near the gate, as the ghat steps are also barefoot territory.
Watch the Shiv Barat procession on Mahashivratri from a raised step, away from the crush.
Ayodhya's Shiva temple
Most of Ayodhya's temples are devoted to Ram and Hanuman, but Nageshwarnath is a temple of Shiva, as Lord of the Serpents. It stands on the riverfront at Ram ki Paidi. The legend is that Kush, Ram's son, lost an armlet while bathing in the Saryu. A serpent princess, a devotee of Shiva, found it and fell in love with him, and Kush built this temple for her.
The oldest survivor
Tradition says this was the only temple left standing when Ayodhya was later abandoned, and that King Vikramaditya found the lost city by it. The building you see today is much later: it was built in 1750 by Naval Rai, a minister of the Nawab Safdar Jung. It has a white spire and a gateway with arches, and inside is a Shiva lingam.
Festivals
Mahashivratri, in February or March, is Nageshwarnath's biggest day. The temple holds a Shiv Barat, a lively procession celebrating Shiva's wedding, and thousands of devotees come. Mondays in the monsoon month of Shravan are also very busy, as devotees pour Saryu water over the lingam.
Visiting
The temple usually opens early in the morning and closes in the evening, with aartis at both ends of the day. Check the times locally. Visit it with the ghats in the evening; the two are next to each other. Photos inside are usually not allowed, but the gateway and spire are easy to photograph from the riverfront.
Nearby
The kachori stalls and sweet shops in the ghat lanes are a few steps away. The Ram Mandir and Hanuman Garhi are a short ride up into the old town.
