About Belur Rajagopura

The Rajagopura is the tall gateway tower at the east entrance to the Chennakeshava Temple complex. It is much younger than the temple itself: it was added in the Vijayanagara period in the late 14th century, when the kings of Vijayanagara repaired the complex and replaced the old gateway.

The tower is the first thing you see from the street, and it rises high above the low, carved Hoysala temples inside. Walking through it gives you the classic first view of the Chennakeshava Temple across the courtyard, so it is a good place to stop and take in the whole site before you look at the details.
