About the Chennakeshava Temple
The Chennakeshava Temple is the reason most people come to Belur. King Vishnuvardhana of the Hoysala dynasty began it in 1117, and the work carried on for about a century. It is dedicated to Vishnu and is still in daily worship. In 2023 it became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas", together with Halebidu and Somanathapura.
The temple stands on a raised, star-shaped platform, and its soapstone walls are covered with carving: bands of elephants, gods and scenes from the epics, and the famous madanikas, the female bracket figures under the roof. Inside, the dark pillared hall has lathe-turned pillars and a carved ceiling. Walk around the outside slowly, then go in, and consider hiring a guide to explain what you are looking at.
