Where Ashoka changed course

Dhauli is a low hill about 8 km south of Bhubaneswar, above the Daya river. Tradition places the Kalinga war of around 261 BCE on the plain below. The slaughter led Emperor Ashoka to give up conquest and turn to Buddhism, and his edicts are carved on a rock at the foot of the hill.

The edicts and the elephant

The inscriptions are protected under a shelter. Among them are two special Kalinga edicts, in which Ashoka speaks of treating people as his children. Above the text, the front half of an elephant emerges from the rock, one of the oldest carved sculptures in Odisha.

The peace pagoda

On top of the hill stands the white Shanti Stupa, built around 1972 with support from Japanese Buddhist groups. Carved panels around the dome show the Buddha's life and the story of the war. The terrace looks out over paddy fields and the river, and the view is the reason to stay until late afternoon. A small Shiva temple, the Dhavaleshwar, stands on the same hilltop.

Evening show

A light and sound show tells the Kalinga story after dark on most evenings. Timings change with the season, and shows are sometimes suspended, so check before you plan an evening around it.

Getting there

Take a car or auto from the city; there is no useful bus. Entry to the hill and the pagoda is free.

Pair it with

Dhauli sits on the road towards Puri, so it makes a good last stop on the way to the coast.
