Best Photo Spots in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar's best photos are of carved sandstone, and sandstone only looks good in low sun. Plan the Old Town temples for early morning and keep Dhauli for late afternoon.

The Old Town circuit

Mukteshwar, Rajarani and Lingaraj sit within about 2 km of each other, so one early walk can cover all three. Mukteshwar first: its arched gateway stands in a small courtyard that gets clean, soft light soon after sunrise, before the school groups arrive. Rajarani opens around sunrise too, and its garden gives you room to step back and fit the whole tower in the frame without a wide lens.

Lingaraj, from outside

Cameras and phones are not allowed inside Lingaraj, and entry is for Hindus only. The shot everyone takes is from the viewing platform on the north side, looking over the wall at the tower rising above the smaller shrines. Mid-morning light is fine here because you are shooting across, not up. A short zoom helps pick out the top of the tower against the sky.

Caves and the hill at Dhauli

Udayagiri is best in the first two hours after opening, when the sun reaches into the carved verandas of the Rani Gumpha. By noon the cells are in deep shadow and the rock is glaring. Dhauli works the other way round: arrive in the last hour of daylight, when the white stupa turns warm and the Daya river plain below goes gold.

Practical notes

  • Tripods are often refused at ticketed monuments; a phone or handheld camera is usually fine outside.
  • Many Old Town temples are active shrines. Ask before photographing priests or people praying.
  • Carry water. The walk between temples is short, but there is little shade after 10 am.
  • The monkeys at Khandagiri take anything that looks like food, including bags.

Each spot has its own page with the best hour and a standing position; start with Mukteshwar if you only have one morning.

Questions

Bhubaneswar — FAQ

Can I take photos inside Bhubaneswar's temples?

Usually not inside active shrines such as Lingaraj. Ticketed monuments like Rajarani allow photos of the exterior and grounds, but tripods and commercial shoots need permission.

Which Bhubaneswar spot is best at sunset?

Dhauli. The peace pagoda faces the open plain, and the white dome warms up in the last hour of light. Stay on for the evening light and sound show if it is running.

Can I cover all five spots in one day?

Yes, with a car. Do the three Old Town temples at sunrise, the caves mid-morning, rest through the afternoon heat, and reach Dhauli for sunset.
