Good to know

Local tips

Come soon after opening, when the arch is in soft light and the courtyard is empty.

Leave your shoes at the edge of the paving; the stone heats up by mid-morning.

Walk into the Siddheswar temple in the same compound before you leave.

Look low on the walls for the carved monkeys and folk-tale scenes.

Pair it with Rajarani, which is a short walk away.

Check dates for the Mukteswar Dance Festival if you are visiting in January.

Carry water; there is little shade in the courtyard after 10 am.

A small temple with a big reputation

Mukteshwar is only about 10 metres tall, yet it is the temple architects point to when they explain Kalinga style. Built in the 10th century, it sits at a turning point: the older plain temples before it, the grander ones like Lingaraj after. It is dedicated to Shiva and is still in worship.

The gateway

The reason people come is the torana, a free-standing stone arch in front of the temple. Its curved top is carved with smiling female figures reclining along the arch, and there is nothing quite like it elsewhere in Odisha. Look at the temple walls too: monkeys, ascetics teaching and scenes from folk tales are carved at eye level, where you can study them closely.

The complex

The temple stands in a small walled garden with a tank. The taller Siddheswar temple is in the same compound, and the Kedar Gouri temple is a short walk away. The whole group takes less than an hour.

Entry and rules

Entry is free and open to all visitors. Remove your shoes where the paving begins. There is no strict phone ban at the courtyard, but avoid photographing people at prayer.

Dance in January

For three evenings in mid-January the courtyard becomes the stage for the Mukteswar Dance Festival, with Odissi performances lit against the temple. It is one of the best ways to see the space.

Getting there

It is in the Old Town, about 2 km from Lingaraj and close to Rajarani, so it fits easily into a morning walk.
