Visit soon after opening, when the rooms are at their quietest.

Check the timings before you go, as the palace usually closes in the middle of the day and on one day a week.

Ask at the counter about photography, which usually needs a separate camera ticket.

Spend most of your time in the Hall of Mirrors and the Fuvara Mahal, the two highlights.

Look out for the old clocks and the long painted scroll of a royal procession.

Wear comfortable shoes, as the best rooms are up a flight of stairs.

Visit Prag Mahal next door on the same trip.

About Aina Mahal

Aina Mahal, the 'Palace of Mirrors', was built around 1750 for Rao Lakhpatji, the ruler of Kutch. It was designed by Ramsinh Malam, a Kutchi craftsman who had spent about 18 years in Europe learning its crafts. He brought those skills home, and the palace mixes Kutchi design with European glass, clocks and decoration.

The highlights are the Hall of Mirrors, where the walls are covered in mirrors set in gilded frames, and the Fuvara Mahal, a pleasure hall with a pool, a raised platform in the middle and fountains to cool the air. The palace was badly damaged in the 2001 earthquake. The part that survived best has been restored and is open as a museum, with paintings, a long scroll showing a royal procession, weapons and old clocks. It stands right next to Prag Mahal, so most people visit both together.
