About Kalo Dungar

Kalo Dungar, or Black Hill, is the highest point in Kutch at about 460 m. It rises from the flat land about 95 km north of Bhuj, beyond the town of Khavda, and gives one of the widest views of the Great Rann: a white salt plain that seems to run to the horizon, with the border with Pakistan somewhere beyond it.

At the top is a Dattatreya temple that is about 400 years old. After the evening aarti, its priests feed cooked rice to the jackals that live on the hill, and many visitors time their trip to see it. The road up is also known for its 'magnetic hill', where cars seem to roll uphill, although it is an optical illusion. There is an army post on the summit, so parts of the hill are off limits, and you need to carry photo ID.
