About Prag Mahal
Prag Mahal is a 19th-century palace built for Rao Pragmalji II, the ruler of Kutch. Work began in 1865 and finished in 1879. It was designed by the British architect Colonel Henry Saint Clair Wilkins in an Italian Gothic style, so it looks more European than Indian, with Gothic arches and a tall clock tower that rises above the old town.
The palace was badly damaged in the 2001 earthquake. Parts have been repaired, including the clock tower, which you can usually climb for views over the rooftops of Bhuj and Hamirsar Lake. The durbar hall still has its chandeliers, some of them broken, and classical statues, while other sections remain cracked and closed. Scenes from the Hindi films Lagaan and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam were shot here, and Aina Mahal stands right next door.
