About the White Rann of Kutch

The White Rann is part of the Great Rann of Kutch, a huge salt marsh that stretches across the north of Kutch towards the border with Pakistan. In the monsoon it fills with shallow water. As the water dries out after the rains it leaves a crust of salt, and by around November the land near Dhordo, about 85 km from Bhuj, becomes a flat white desert that runs to the horizon.

The salt looks its best at sunset, when it turns pink and orange, and on full-moon nights, when it glows under the moon. From about November to February the Rann Utsav sets up a tent city at Dhordo, with folk music, craft stalls and camel carts on the salt. The White Rann is in a border area, so every visitor needs a permit, which Indian nationals can get online or at the Bhirandiyara checkpost on the way from Bhuj.
