Jul – Sep
Warm and humid with on-and-off showers that cool the air and green the gardens — rain rarely lasts all day.
Pack: a compact umbrella or light rain shell, quick-dry clothes and grippy footwear.
Plan a monsoon day →October to March
The monsoon clears by October and the air stays mostly dry until March. November to February brings cool mornings and nights and warm, sunny afternoons, ideal for a full day outdoors. Winter light is low and golden for much of the day, which suits the terracotta. Weekends in this season bring day-trippers from Kolkata and Durgapur, so aim for a weekday if you can.
Late December and the Mela
The Bishnupur Mela, a fair of crafts, food and music, usually runs over the last week of December on a ground near Rasmancha. It is the busiest time of the year in town, and rooms fill early. Come for it deliberately or plan around it. The events and festivals page has more.
April to June
Western Bengal gets very hot before the monsoon, and April and May often pass 40 °C. The temples offer little shade, and brick and laterite radiate heat long after sunset. If you must come now, see the temples from sunrise to about ten o'clock and again in the last hour of daylight, and rest indoors in between.
The monsoon
Rain usually arrives in the second half of June and lasts through September. Showers are heavy but often come in bursts, and the lawns turn green. The laterite paths get slippery, and the wet brick darkens, which can look dramatic in photographs. Crowds are thin. Carry an umbrella and shoes with grip.
The best hours of the day
Whatever the month, the first two hours after the gates open and the hour before sunset are the best times to be at the temples. The light is softer, the brick shows its colour and the paths are quieter. Midday is for lunch and for the weavers' workshops. For the best spot at each temple, see the Bishnupur photo spots page.
Questions
Bishnupur — FAQ
Is Bishnupur too hot to visit in May?
It is very hot, often above 40 °C, and there is little shade between the temples. It is possible if you sightsee only early in the morning and late in the afternoon, but most people are happier coming between October and March.
Is the monsoon a bad time to visit Bishnupur?
Not necessarily. It rains heavily at times, but showers often pass, the gardens are green and there are few other visitors. Watch your footing on the wet laterite paths.
How cold does Bishnupur get in winter?
Days are pleasant and sunny, but December and January nights can be chilly. A light jacket or shawl is enough for early mornings and evenings.
