Best Photo Spots in Bishnupur

Bishnupur is a town for close-up photography: brick temples whose every wall is a carved clay story. The light decides everything, because red terracotta goes flat and orange at midday and comes alive in the first and last hours of the day.

Light on brick and laterite

The Bishnupur temples are built of red brick on laterite bases, and both reflect harsh light badly. Go in the first two hours after the gates open, when shadows pick out the carving, or in the last hour before sunset, when the brick turns a deep rust. On a clear winter afternoon the west-facing walls glow; in summer the midday glare is hard on both you and the camera.

A one-day route

Start at Rasmancha as the gates open, because the ticket counter is there and the low sun shows off its row of arches. Move on to Shyam Rai and Jor Bangla while the light is still soft. Spend the hot middle of the day indoors, at a weaver's workshop or over lunch. Come back for Madan Mohan and the Dalmadal cannon in the late afternoon.

Getting close to the panels

The real subject here is the panel work: Krishna with the gopis, battles from the Ramayana, royal hunts, boats and musicians. A short telephoto or the zoom on your phone lets you pick out single panels from the ground without climbing on the plinths. Shoot the corners of a temple, where two carved faces meet, for a sense of depth. For a wide shot, step back onto the lawns so the whole roofline fits.

Rules worth knowing

Still photography is generally allowed at the ASI-protected monuments. A tripod or professional video kit may need permission, and flying a drone at a protected monument needs prior approval. Do not climb onto the plinths or touch the terracotta, which is fragile and already worn in places. At Madan Mohan, which is an active temple, avoid photographing the deity or the priests during worship unless you have asked first.

People in the frame

The lawns and paths are often empty early in the morning, which makes solo portraits easy. For portraits of local people, weavers or rickshaw drivers, ask first and accept a no. For outfit ideas that suit the brick, see what to wear.

Questions

Bishnupur — FAQ

Which Bishnupur temple has the best terracotta for close-up photos?

Jor Bangla and Shyam Rai have the richest panel work. Jor Bangla is best for epic and hunting scenes, while Shyam Rai is known for its Ras Lila panels, where Krishna dances in a circle with the gopis.

Can I use a tripod at the Bishnupur temples?

Phones and hand-held cameras are fine at the protected monuments. A tripod or professional video set-up may need permission from the ASI, so ask at the Rasmancha counter before setting one up.

Can I fly a drone over the temples?

Not without prior approval. Drones need permission at ASI-protected monuments, and flying over an active temple such as Madan Mohan would be unwelcome anyway.

Are the temples lit up after dark?

Rasmancha is often lit in the evening, and you can photograph it from outside the fence after the gates close. Check locally, as lighting is not guaranteed every night.
