Local tips
Walk around all four sides, because each face carries a different set of panels.
Look for the circular Ras Lila panels, where Krishna dances inside rings of gopis.
Step through the arches and look at the inner walls, which are also carved.
Stand back on the lawn for the full view, since the five towers only line up from a distance.
Visit together with Jor Bangla, which is nearby and covered by the same ticket.
Keep off the plinth and do not touch the panels, which are fragile.
Aim for early morning on the east side and late afternoon on the west side for the best light.
Five towers
Shyam Rai was built in 1643 by King Raghunath Singha, and a foundation plaque records the date. It is the town's finest pancharatna temple, with five towers: four at the corners of the roof and a larger one in the centre. Each face of the building has a row of arched entrances, so it looks almost the same from every side.
The Ras Lila panels
Shyam Rai has some of the richest terracotta in Bishnupur. Its best-known panels show the Ras Lila, Krishna dancing with the gopis in circles of figures. Around them are scenes from Krishna's life, episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and floral and geometric borders. Unusually, the carving continues on some inside walls, so look up and around once you are through the arches.
Visiting
Shyam Rai is an ASI-protected monument and is covered by the combined ticket sold at Rasmancha. It usually opens from sunrise to sunset. It is close to Jor Bangla, and most visitors see the two together. Allow at least half an hour.
How to look at it
Walk around all four sides first, because each face has different panels. Then stand back for the whole shape, as the five towers only line up properly from a distance. Close up, pick a single arch and follow the panels from bottom to top. Morning light suits the east face and late afternoon the west.
Protecting the terracotta
The panels are more than three and a half centuries old and easily damaged. Do not touch them, lean on the walls or climb the plinth for a better angle. Hold children back from the lower courses, where most of the wear has happened.
