Local tips

Start early in the morning to finish the climb before the rocks heat up.

Wear proper shoes for the climb and carry slip-ons for inside the caves.

Take at least a litre of water, as there is little on the path.

Book a car or auto-rickshaw for the return trip, as transport is scarce at the site.

Do not use flash inside the caves, where people are praying.

Say no politely if people ask for money on the path.

Keep this trip for a cooler month if you can, as April to June is very hot on the rocks.

Before the enlightenment

The Dungeshwari caves, also called the Mahakala caves or Pragbodhi, sit in rocky hills about 12 to 15 km from Bodh Gaya. Buddhists believe the Buddha spent years here practising severe fasting before he gave it up, went down to the plain and sat under the Bodhi Tree. It is the part of the story that makes sense of the rest.

What you see

The main cave holds a small gold statue of the fasting Buddha, shown thin with ribs showing. It is a moving image and quite different from the calm Buddhas in town. Another cave has a Hindu shrine to the goddess Dungeshwari, and both are visited by worshippers. A small Tibetan monastery is on the hillside, and prayer flags stretch across the slope.

The climb

Reaching the caves means a climb up a rocky path with steps, taking 20 to 40 minutes depending on your pace. It is steep and uneven in places, with little shade. Wear good shoes for the climb, and carry water.

Getting there

It is about 45 minutes by road from Bodh Gaya. A hired car or auto-rickshaw is the easiest way to go and come back. The site is usually open from morning until early evening, and entry is free.

What to expect

It is far quieter than Bodh Gaya. You may meet children and adults asking for money along the path. A polite no is fine.

Why go

For the view over the plain, the peace of the hill and the fasting Buddha, it is worth the half day. Go early, especially from March to June, when the rock heats up fast.
