Local tips
Come in the morning, as the gates usually close for a break around midday.
Walk to the far end of the avenue of disciples for a photo with the whole statue in view.
Combine it with the Thai monastery, which is only a few minutes' walk away.
Carry water in the hot months, as there is little shade on the avenue.
Take your shoes off before stepping onto the platform at the base of the statue.
Keep voices low, as people come here to pray as well as to look.
Check closing time in winter, when the gates may shut a little earlier.
An 80-foot Buddha
The Great Buddha Statue is a seated Buddha about 80 feet (25 metres) tall, built of sandstone blocks and red granite. It was made by a Japanese Buddhist group, the Daijokyo sect, and unveiled by the Dalai Lama in 1989. It shows the Buddha in meditation on a lotus, and it can be seen over the rooftops from parts of the town.
The approach
A paved avenue leads up to the statue, lined with ten smaller statues of the Buddha's main disciples. The garden around it is tidy and calm, and there are benches in the shade. The Daijokyo temple next door is part of the same complex.
Visiting
It is a short walk from the Mahabodhi Temple and close to the Thai monastery, so it fits easily into a morning loop. Entry is generally free. The gates usually close for a break around midday and shut in the early evening, a little earlier in winter, so check before you go.
This is still a place of worship. Dress modestly, and take off your shoes if you step onto the platform at the base of the statue.
Why it works for photos
The statue is huge and simple, so it photographs well against a clear sky. The line of disciples gives a strong lead-in. In December and January there are often monks and nuns walking here, adding colour to the scene.
Nearby
The monastery road around the statue has several national temples, including the Thai and Bhutanese ones. Stalls near the gate sell prayer beads, flags and small statues.
