The place of enlightenment
The Mahabodhi Temple marks the spot where, Buddhists believe, the Buddha reached enlightenment. The present brick temple dates from around the 5th to 6th century, though it has been restored many times, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its spire rises about 55 metres above a courtyard crowded with small votive stupas. The Bodhi Tree behind it is a descendant of the original fig, and the stone slab beneath it, the Vajrasana, marks where the Buddha sat.
Getting in
The complex usually opens at 5 am and closes at 9 pm. Entry is free. At the gate there are metal detectors and a bag check. Phones and bags go into free lockers by the entrance. Cameras are allowed if you buy a camera ticket at the same counter. Shoes come off before you go in, and there is a shoe counter.
Inside
The temple sits below street level, so you walk down steps into the courtyard. Walk around the temple clockwise. Behind it, under the Bodhi Tree, there are platforms where anyone can sit and meditate. Pilgrims prostrate on wooden boards along the paths, and chanting from different groups goes on through the day.
There is also a meditation park beside the temple, which charges a small fee and is meant for people who want to sit quietly.
When to go
Early morning is the calmest time, with chanting and cool air. Evenings are lovely too, when butter lamps are lit. December and January are the busiest months, when ceremonies fill the grounds.
