Local tips
Go in the late afternoon, when the brick glows and the heat has eased.
Walk or cycle across the river rather than taking a car, as the route is part of the visit.
Carry water, as there is little shade at the stupa itself.
Do not climb on the brickwork; walk the path around the mound instead.
Ask before photographing villagers or children.
Avoid the walk in the monsoon, when the river rises and the paths get muddy.
Leave before dark, as the village lanes have little lighting.
Sujata's offering
The story goes that after years of fasting, the Buddha accepted a bowl of milk-rice from a village woman named Sujata. The meal gave him the strength to sit under the Bodhi Tree. The Sujata Stupa stands in Bakraur, the village where she is said to have lived, just across the river from Bodh Gaya.
The stupa
What you see is a large, round brick mound. It was built in stages, with its first phase dating back more than two thousand years and later work in the Pala period. The Archaeological Survey of India excavated it and cleared the brickwork you see today. There is no statue and no shrine to enter, just the mound, a path around it and open fields.
Getting there
It takes about 20 minutes on foot from the Mahabodhi area, crossing the river. In the dry months the riverbed is mostly sand. You can also take an e-rickshaw or hire a bicycle. The site is usually open in daylight hours and is free.
The village
Walking through Bakraur is part of the visit. It is a farming village, with houses, fields, cows and children who may follow you. Be polite and do not photograph people without asking. Some children may ask for money or pens; it is better to support the local school or a known charity than to hand things out.
Why go
It is quiet, it is rural, and it tells the part of the story that happened just before the enlightenment. It is a good contrast to the busy temple area.
