Where to Eat in Cherrapunji
Sohra has only a handful of restaurants, spread between Upper Sohra, Lower Sohra and a few resorts. Plan meals around the sights, because there is little food at the cliff edges beyond snack stalls.

Not sure what to order? The Cherrapunji food guide starts from the dishes — what each one is, when to eat it, and which of these kitchens is known for it.
Plan meals around the sights
The viewpoints at Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters have stalls for tea, momos and packaged snacks, but not much more. For a proper lunch, head back to Sohra market in Upper Sohra, or to Mawsmai village, which has a few restaurants near the cave.
A Khasi lunch
Sohra Jadoh Stall, in the market area, is the place on this list for jadoh and doh-neiiong. It works like other local tea stalls: a few pots, a plate of rice and quick service. Go at lunchtime. The best dishes often run out by mid-afternoon.
Vegetarian food
Orange Roots in Sohra is fully vegetarian and serves thalis, South Indian dishes and simple meals for travellers. It is the most reliable choice for vegetarians and for anyone who wants something familiar after a long day.
A café with a view
Café Cherrapunjee is at the Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort in Laitkynsew, on the Nongriat side of Sohra. It serves meals, momos and coffee. It is a good stop if you are staying in that area or coming back from the root bridge side.
Food on the root bridge trek
In Nongriat, homestays cook simple Khasi meals for trekkers, listed here as Nongriat Village Kitchen. There are also small shops selling water, tea and noodles along the steps. If you plan to stay the night, ask your host about dinner when you arrive, since meals are cooked to order.
Sundays and evenings
Sohra is mostly Christian, and on Sunday many eateries close or open only after church. Restaurants also close early by city standards. Eat dinner by about 8 pm, or at your hotel.
Questions
Cherrapunji — FAQ
Where should I eat in Cherrapunji?
4 places are listed here, across 4 areas. Each entry says what that kitchen is known for rather than reprinting its menu, so pick by the dish you want and the area you'll be in.
Are there good vegetarian restaurants in Cherrapunji?
Yes — 1 of the places listed is pure vegetarian, and the food-type badge on every card tells you before you set out.
What should I order in Cherrapunji?
Start from the dishes rather than the restaurants — the Cherrapunji food guide covers what each dish is and when to eat it, then links to the places that do it well.
Are restaurants in Sohra open on Sundays?
Some are, many are not. Sunday is a church day, so small eateries often close or open late. Hotel restaurants are the safest bet.
Can I get food on the Double Decker root bridge trek?
Yes. Small shops along the steps sell water, tea and snacks, and homestays in Nongriat cook simple meals. Carry some water and snacks anyway.
Is there food at the waterfall viewpoints?
Only stalls with tea, momos and snacks. For a full meal, go to Sohra market or Mawsmai village.
How late do restaurants stay open in Sohra?
Not late. Most close in the early evening, so eat dinner by about 8 pm or plan to eat where you are staying.
