Good to know

Local tips

Come between June and October if you want all seven streams running.

Stay for the late afternoon, when the setting sun lights the cliff.

Look south on clear days for the plains of Bangladesh at the foot of the hills.

Pair it with Mawsmai Cave, about a kilometre away, in one stop.

Stay a night in Mawsmai village if you want both evening and morning at the viewpoint.

Keep behind the barriers, as the cliff edge is often wet and slippery.

Skip a special trip in the dry winter months, when the falls may be only a trickle.

Seven streams over one cliff

Seven Sisters Falls, called Nohsngithiang in Khasi and sometimes Mawsmai Falls, pours over a line of limestone cliffs about a kilometre south of Mawsmai village. It falls about 315 m and averages around 70 m wide. When it is running fully, the water splits into seven separate streams along the cliff face, which gives it its name.

Only in the rain

The falls depend on rain. In the monsoon and just after, all seven streams run and spread along the cliff. In the dry months, roughly December to February, they can shrink to a few trickles or stop altogether. If you visit in winter, expect a cliff more than a waterfall.

The view from the road

You see the falls from a viewpoint beside the road near Mawsmai, not from the base. On clear days the plateau falls away below you to the flat plains of Bangladesh, which makes the view south as memorable as the falls themselves.

Sunset

The cliff catches the evening sun. On a clear evening the water and rock turn warm gold, and that is the photo most people come back for. Clouds often roll across the cliff, so be patient.

Nearby

Mawsmai Cave is close by, and Mawsmai village has a few restaurants and places to stay within walking distance of the viewpoint. Nohkalikai Falls is a short drive away.

Before you go

The viewpoint is at a cliff edge. Stay behind the barriers, especially when the ground is wet and cloud cuts the view.
