Local tips
Arrive soon after opening, before tour groups fill the narrow passages.
Wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty, as you will brush against wet rock.
Carry your shoes in a bag if you go barefoot, and wash your feet at the exit.
Keep bags small, since big backpacks catch in the tight squeezes.
Hold children's hands on the slippery floor and in the low sections.
Skip it if you are uneasy in tight spaces, as there is no quick way out once you start.
Combine it with Seven Sisters Falls, about a kilometre away, in one stop.
A short, lit limestone cave
Mawsmai Cave is a limestone cave near Mawsmai village, a few kilometres south of Sohra market. The cave system is longer, but only a section of about 150 m is open to visitors. That section is lit with lamps, which makes it one of the easiest caves in Meghalaya to explore without a guide. Inside you walk past stalactites, stalagmites and rock shaped by water over a very long time.
Tight spots and a wet floor
The route is narrow in places. In a few spots you squeeze sideways or bend low, and the floor is wet, uneven and slippery. Many visitors take off their shoes and walk barefoot. The route runs one way, so on busy days you queue in the passages and move at the pace of the person in front. People who dislike tight spaces may find it uncomfortable. Most people take 30 to 45 minutes.
Photos inside
Phone photos work well under the lamps. A tripod is awkward in the narrow passages and slows the line behind you. Wipe your lens often, as the air inside is damp.
Around the cave
The entrance area has stalls and a few places to eat. Seven Sisters Falls is about a kilometre away, so the two fit easily into one stop. Nohkalikai Falls makes a good third stop on the same drive.
Opening hours
The cave is usually open every day from morning to late afternoon. Hours can change and heavy rain may affect access, so check locally before you go.
