Best time to visit Chilika
The best months for Chilika are November to February, when the birds are in and the lagoon is calm. Outside that window you can still see dolphins, but the lagoon changes a lot with the seasons.

Plan a monsoon day →November to February: birds and calm water
This is Chilika's season. Migratory birds begin arriving in November and stay until about March, with the biggest numbers in December and January. Mornings are cool, the water is usually flat, and boat trips are comfortable. The Makar Mela at Kalijai falls in mid-January, and the state sometimes holds a Chilika bird festival around the same time. OTDC rooms book up at weekends.
March to mid-June: heat and haze
The birds leave, the lagoon shrinks, and days are hot and humid. Dolphin trips at Satapada still run, best at dawn before the heat and wind build. Afternoons on an open boat are hard going.
Mid-June to September: monsoon
The monsoon usually reaches the Odisha coast in mid-June. Rivers pour fresh water into the lagoon, its area grows, and Nalabana island disappears under water. Winds and rain can cancel boat trips at short notice. The landscape is green and there are few visitors, but this is not the time for birds, whatever some summaries suggest.
October and November: cyclones
October brings clearing skies, but October and November are cyclone months on the Odisha coast. Boats stop running during warnings. Keep plans flexible and check forecasts.
A note on the season cards
Some summaries describe rough seas and packing swimwear. Chilika is a lagoon, not an open beach; swimming is not part of a visit, and the risk in bad weather is wind on the boats, not surf.
Summary
- Birds: December and January are the peak.
- Dolphins: year round, best on calm mornings from October to March.
- Avoid: heavy monsoon weeks and cyclone alerts.
