Good to know

Local tips

Pick one base for two nights rather than trying to see the whole lagoon in a day.

Book boats at the official jetty counter, where rates are posted.

Be on the water soon after sunrise, before the wind picks up.

Wear a life jacket on every boat, even on short trips.

Carry binoculars; wildlife is usually seen at a distance.

Bring cash for boats and small restaurants.

Check the weather in October and November for cyclone warnings.

A lagoon that changes shape

Chilika stretches about 65 km along the Odisha coast, separated from the Bay of Bengal by a long strip of sand. Rivers feed it from the west, the sea enters through a narrow mouth near Satapada, and the water is a shifting mix of fresh and salt. In the monsoon it spreads out and turns brown with river silt; in winter it shrinks back and clears.

Life on the water

More than a hundred fishing villages depend on the lagoon. You will see wooden boats with patched sails, bamboo fish traps set in long lines, and men wading chest-deep with nets. Illegal prawn enclosures once choked parts of the lagoon; many have since been cleared, and the Chilika Development Authority manages the waters.

Choosing a base

  • Satapada: dolphins and the sea mouth, closest to Puri.
  • Barkul or Balugaon: Kalijai and the Nalabana bird sanctuary, on the highway and railway.
  • Rambha: quieter water, hills and small islands in the south.

Stay at least two nights at one of them. Road transfers between bases take hours.

The boats

Trips run from each base's jetty, usually by state or cooperative operators with posted rates. Book at the official counter, wear a life jacket and settle the route before you leave.

Wildlife

Irrawaddy dolphins live near the sea mouth. In winter, hundreds of thousands of migratory birds gather at Nalabana and Mangalajodi. Golden jackals, fishing cats and many resident birds live around the edges.

Why it matters

Chilika was declared India's first Ramsar wetland in 1981, and its recovery after the sea mouth was reopened in 2000 is one of India's better conservation stories.
