Best Photo Spots in Chilika

Chilika is a lagoon you photograph from a boat. What you need most is an early start, a zoom lens and a boatman who will cut the engine and wait.

Light on the water

The lagoon is flat and wide, so the sky makes the picture. Sunrise and the hour after it bring calm water, soft colour and fishermen hauling nets. By late morning the wind picks up, the surface turns choppy and the light goes harsh. Late afternoon is the second window, especially at Rambha, where the hills catch the sun.

Dolphins at Satapada

Irrawaddy dolphins surface for a second or two and rarely jump. Keep the camera up, use burst mode and a fast shutter, and watch for ripples. A 200 mm zoom or more helps, because boats should stay back and switch engines off. Do not expect a close-up.

Birds at Nalabana and Mangalajodi

Visitors cannot land on Nalabana island; boats stop at a distance. That makes a long lens essential for flamingos and pelicans. Mangalajodi, on the northern shore, uses small punted boats through reed channels and lets you get much closer to ducks and waders at dawn.

Kalijai and Rambha

Kalijai's temple on its small rock island is best photographed from the boat as you approach, with the water around it. At Rambha, the islands and ringed hills look best from the water in the late afternoon. Breakfast Island makes a good foreground.

Practical notes

  • Keep camera gear in a dry bag; spray is common on longer crossings.
  • Wear a life jacket; it does not stop you shooting.
  • Do not ask boatmen to chase dolphins or drive into bird flocks.
  • Drones disturb birds and need permission in the sanctuary area.

Each spot has its own page. Start with Satapada if you only have one morning.

Questions

Chilika — FAQ

What lens do I need for Chilika?

A zoom of at least 200 mm for dolphins and birds. A wide lens is useful for the lagoon at sunrise and Rambha's islands.

Can I get close to the birds at Nalabana?

Not very. Boats must stay outside the island's boundary. Mangalajodi offers closer views from small boats.

What time do boats leave?

From early morning. Aim to be on the water soon after sunrise, when the lagoon is calm.
