A shrine on a rock
Kalijai is a small hill island in the western part of Chilika, topped by the temple of Maa Kalijai. From a distance it looks like a green knob rising from the flat water, with the temple's tower just visible. Boats reach it from Barkul or Balugaon on the western shore.
The story
The legend is well known around the lagoon. A young woman named Jai was being taken by boat to her husband's village when a storm struck. The boat capsized and she drowned, while her father and the boatman survived. People came to believe that Jai had become one with the goddess Kali, and she was worshipped as Kalijai. Fishermen still pray to her before crossing in rough weather.
Visiting
The boat lands at a small jetty. Shoes come off before the steps, and modest dress is expected. The temple is small and busy with local pilgrims. After darshan, walk round the island; there are stalls for offerings and tea. There is no entry fee, but you pay for the boat.
Makar Mela
On Makar Sankranti, usually 14 or 15 January, the island hosts its biggest fair. Hundreds of boats cross from the western jetties, and the island is packed from dawn. If you want to see it, go early and use a registered boat.
Combining trips
Boats from Barkul often combine Kalijai with a stop near Nalabana in winter. Agree the route and time before you set off.
Tips for the crossing
The lagoon can turn choppy by midday. Mornings are calmer.
