Good to know

Local tips

Take the first boat of the morning, when the water is calmest.

Ask the boatman to switch off the engine near the dolphins.

Never ask the boat to chase or circle the dolphins.

Book at the official jetty counter, not with roadside agents.

Carry binoculars and a zoom lens; sightings are quick and distant.

Wear sandals for the sea-mouth sandbar stop.

Eat crab curry at a Satapada restaurant after the trip.

Chilika's dolphins

Irrawaddy dolphins are small, round-headed and grey, with a stubby fin and no long beak. They live in a handful of rivers and coastal waters in South and Southeast Asia, and Chilika holds one of the larger groups. Satapada, on the lagoon's eastern side near the sea mouth, is where boats go to find them.

How the trip works

Boats leave from the Satapada jetty, run by local operators. A typical trip takes two to three hours: out to the dolphin area, then on to the sea mouth, where the lagoon opens to the Bay of Bengal. Many trips stop at the sandbar beach there. Some also visit Rajhans island. Rates are posted at the counter; book there, not with roadside agents.

The rules

To protect the dolphins, boats are supposed to switch off engines near them, keep a good distance and limit how many gather at once. In practice this does not always happen. You can help: ask the boatman to cut the engine, do not ask him to chase, and choose a boat that follows the rules. Engine noise and propellers are real threats to this population.

What you will see

A dolphin surfaces for a breath, shows its back and fin for a second, and dives again. Sightings are common on calm mornings but never guaranteed. Patience and a pair of binoculars help.

When to go

Early morning, when the lagoon is still and the light is soft. October to March has the calmest water. In the monsoon, trips may be cancelled.

Getting there

Satapada is about 50 km from Puri. Staying overnight lets you take the first boat of the day.
