Best time to visit Darjeeling

The best time to visit Darjeeling depends on whether you want the mountains. For clear views of Kanchenjunga, go from October to early December; for flowers and first-flush tea, go in spring.

October to early December: the clearest skies

After the monsoon washes the dust out of the air, the range often stands clear from dawn until late morning. This is the best stretch for the Tiger Hill sunrise. Days are bright and cool, and nights get properly cold by late November. October brings Dashain and Tihar, when the town fills with visitors from Kolkata and the rest of Bengal, so book rooms and the toy train early.

Late December to February: cold and quiet

Winter mornings can be very clear, but it is cold and some small hotels have little heating. Crowds thin out after New Year. Losar, the Tibetan new year, usually falls in February or early March. Snow in town is rare.

March to May: tea and rhododendrons

Spring is the second busy season. Plucking starts again in March, and the first-flush tea is made at estates like Happy Valley. Rhododendrons flower on the higher ridges. The catch is haze. Kanchenjunga is often clear at dawn in March and April but can disappear for days in May as dust and cloud rise.

June to September: the monsoon

Around four-fifths of Darjeeling's yearly rain falls in these four months. Cloud sits on the town for days, and the mountain view is mostly gone. Landslides can close Hill Cart Road and other routes, and suspend the full toy-train line from New Jalpaiguri. The tea gardens are deep green, rooms are cheaper, and short dry spells happen. Build in spare days, and check road and train news before you travel.

A simple rule

For the mountains, come in October or November. For tea and flowers, come in April. If you come in the rains, come for the mist and the gardens, not the view.

Questions

Darjeeling — FAQ

Which month gives the best chance of seeing Kanchenjunga?

October and November are the most reliable, followed by December. Even then, the peaks are clearest early in the morning, so plan views before 9 am.

Is Darjeeling worth visiting in the monsoon?

Yes, if you want quiet, green tea gardens and misty streets, and you can accept rain most days and a small chance of seeing the peaks. Keep your plans flexible in case of landslides.

When is the Darjeeling tea harvest?

Plucking runs roughly from March to November. The first flush is in spring, the second from about late May into June, then the monsoon and autumn flushes. The bushes rest in winter.
